Katy-based Academy Sports + Outdoors opens its first store in Lexington

Academy Sports + Outdoors is opening its first store in Lexington, Ky. — its sixth Kentucky store overall and the fifth new store to open this year.

The Lexington location will open on September 30, with opening festivities taking place throughout the weekend. With its opening, Academy will be halfway through its plan of opening nine new stores nationwide this year.

The Katy-based sports and outdoor retailer has posted record sales during the pandemic, citing both the influx of people wanting to go outside during COVID-19 shutdowns and the long-term trends that have popularized health, wellness and the outdoors. The company has begun to pursue nationwide expansion in which it plans to open 80 to 100 new stores over the next five years in new and existing markets. It currently operates 264 stores in 17 states.

The Academy’s new store in Lexington will partner with the University of Kentucky Athletics to sell licensed apparel, novelty items and tailgating gear. Current and former University of Kentucky athletes will make an appearance at the inauguration, including Texas men’s basketball player Casson Wallace and former NBA player Kyle Macy, the Academy said in a statement.

“Whether you’re gearing up for a big Kentucky game, a little leaguer looking for the perfect pair of cleats, or gearing up for your next outdoor adventure in the Daniel Boone National Forest, our great value and our services are creating new opportunities for families to get active,” Sam Johnson, executive vice president of retail operations for the Academy, said in a statement.
