TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — The holiday spirit is all around us, and for 20 Tallahassee kids, the spirit of giving was in the spotlight on Tuesday.
Academy Sports + Outdoors teamed up with current Florida State Seminole Amari Gainer, former Nole Pat Watkins and the Tallahassee Police Athletic League to bring these 20 kids a shopping spree, a day they won’t soon forget. .
“Just for them to get presents for Christmas in December is a wonderful time of year,” Gainer said. “It’s great to give back.”
For 20 Tallahassee kids, Tuesday was all about the reception.
“I was selected for my love of football and my academic achievement,” said 11-year-old Amare Lewis.
“I play college basketball and I can buy my team shoe here,” Nia Bowen said of what she chose to buy. “It’s great for Christmas.”
Thanks to Academy Sports + Outdoors, each child received $100 to get what they wanted.
“I picked a few slides, a few bracelets,” Lewis said. “I know a lot of kids can’t really afford things like this, so it really means a lot to them to help me choose things like this.”
“These kids are really great kids, not only are they good at school, but they’re generally good people,” Watkins said. “Whenever you’re dealing with people like that, it’s always easy to get involved.”
