Lake Charles, LA (KPLC) – Christmas has come early this year for the children of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Louisiana.
Twenty children faced a tough decision Thursday night.
“Our little ones could each get a $187 gift card from the Academy to spend in the store to say ‘you’re awesome, you’re an amazing young person and we appreciate you,'” the big brothers director said. and big sisters. said director Erin Davidson.
Journalist: “What are you going to spend your money on?”
“Nikes. Nike and whatever comes to mind,” said Alayna George.
A partnership between Academy Sports and Outdoors and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Louisiana has made this possible for children who are currently on the waitlist for a mentor.
“Just to see the kids’ faces light up when we were able to give back, you know,” said store manager Ormise Scott. “Just a small token of our appreciation for the future.”
“It gives us the opportunity to get to know their personalities, to get to know their hobbies, to get to know their guardian parents, so there’s a trust there,” Davidson said. “And then also, as we often hang out with them, we match them pretty quickly.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Louisiana serves as a volunteer mentoring network for children ages 6-18 in 6 parishes.
“It means more than I could ever put into words,” said volunteer Jillian Cormier. “I love what I do. I love giving back to the community. I love pairing little ones like Alayna with big ones.
Davidson said donations like this are a huge boon to the organization.
