Academy Sports, AAMU partner for the youth mentoring program

As part of the program, Alabama A&M student-athletes will mentor children throughout the 2021 spring semester.

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – Academy Sports + Outdoors and Alabama A&M Athletics team up to provide baseball equipment to children in Huntsville.

On Tuesday, the two groups donated an Academy Sports + Outdoors gift card, balls, gloves and other baseball equipment to the Huntsville Lakewood Recreation League as part of an outreach program.

As part of the program, Alabama A&M student-athletes will visit and mentor children throughout the 2021 spring semester.

Alabama A&M athletic director Bryan Hicks said: “We care about ourselves, we support them and try to help them through these difficult times, and our student-athletes are equally rewarded for being a part of them. “

The Huntsville Lakewood Recreation League says this mentoring program will help some 50 children in the community.

The partnership between Academy Sports + Outdoors and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) focuses on building meaningful community initiatives within the SWAC footprint. Specifically, these initiatives will seek to activate and amplify grassroots efforts, such as outreach and mentorship programs for youth, which include student-athletes and administrators from across the conference.
